In this fast and furious game of quick hand-eye coordination, can you be the first to slam all your cards onto the Spit Pile? This one’s for 2 players, so if your child can keep up and doesn’t get frustrated with losing games where you have to be fast, it’s a fun one to use for one-on-one bonding time.

How to Deal

To play Spit you’ll need one deck of standard playing cards (remove the Jokers).

Shuffle the cards first, then the dealer deals 26 cards to each player, face down. Without looking at the cards, each player must create five piles of cards in front of them. These are the draw piles. Leave space between both players. The middle ground is where the Spit Piles will go and where the play will be happening.

The remaining cards go directly in front of each player as your “extra” pile.

Turn over the top card from each of the five piles so that a single card is face up.

How to Play

Here’s where things get really fast and exciting! As soon as you both are ready, start the game by yelling “Spit!” at the same time.

Each of you flip a card over from your extra pile and place that card in the middle. This becomes the beginning of the Spit Pile. Once the Spit starter is there, you must quickly take the top cards from your five piles and add them to the Spit Piles (it doesn’t have to be yours, it can be either pile).

But you can’t just throw any card onto the Spit Piles, they have to be either one higher, or one lower. For example, if a 10 is showing on one of the Spit Piles you can play either a nine or a Jack (suit doesn’t matter).

*Aces can be high or low and fluctuate as such throughout the game.

As you deplete the cards in your initial five piles, replace them with cards from your extra pile. You should always have five cards face up in front of you during play.

If neither of you are able to play from any of your five piles, then shout “Spit!” and both of you must take a card from your extra pile of cards and place it face up on your Spit Pile (at the same time). Continue playing as before.

If both of you can play a card to a Spit Pile, whoever gets there first leaves their card. This is a game for quick hands and slowpokes miss out!

Oh, don’t forget: you’re only allowed to use one hand to flip cards over and add to the Spit Piles.

How to Win

Move fast to get rid of all the cards in your hand before your opponent does!
