How to Play Slap Jack

Can you win all the cards by being the fastest one to slap the jack? This game takes quick reflexes. While it might be frustrating for a kid who hates to lose, I think that’s a great learning opportunity.

How to deal:

Deal the entire deck, one at a time to each player. The piles do not have to be even. Don’t look at your cards and straighten them into a neat pile.

How to Play

Each player takes turns placing one card from their pile face up in the center of a table, forming a pile.

When you see a Jack, be the first to slap it and you get the entire pile. Shuffle it into the pile in your hand and continue playing.

If you slap a card that’s not a Jack, you have to give the player who laid that card, one of your cards. If two people slap, the first person with their hand on the Jack gets the pile.

How to Win

The object of the game is to get all the cards.

If a player runs out of cards, they stay in the game until the next Jack is played. If they don’t successfully slap it, they are out.

21 Card Games Kids Love

The spring sun beat in through the walls of the tent and birds chirped loudly. My two boys climbed over me, requesting chocolate milk and urgently expressing their need to pee. I put on my glasses and glanced at my phone for a time check.

5:30 am. oy!

It’s one thing to keep them occupied and quiet on a weekend at home while my husband sleeps in, but 5:30 am in the great outdoors while camping at a campground with “quiet hours” until 8am? That’s a whole new challenge. At least at home you can turn on the TV and doze on the couch while they gorge on cartoons and tablet time. But what can keep two loud, rambunctious boys occupied for hours while the rest of the campground sleeps? [Read more…] about 21 Card Games Kids Love

Olympic Sports STEAM: Backyard Target Shooting

The Summer Olympics will be here again before you know it, and with it, an opportunity for our kids to learn about new sports and have a little fun while they do it. My 6 & 4 year old boys are still a little young for many of the math and science applications of sports, even simple things like calculating speed, determining the best angles for goal scoring, and exploring physics topics like drag in the water for swimming.  [Read more…] about Olympic Sports STEAM: Backyard Target Shooting

Hiking With Kids

Growing up, I hiked a lot. I spent a lot of time in nature, exploring the woods near my grandfather’s cabin, on organized hikes with my Girl Scout Troop, and even longer day hikes with extended family members. When I had kids, I knew that instilling a love of nature and the quiet solitude of the woods in my boys needed to be an important priority in my parenting.  [Read more…] about Hiking With Kids
